I'm Grace Lee (SOME.GAL), a multidisciplinary artist and DJ based in Sheffield, working across painting, digital art, animation, poetry, sound design, costume and VR. My practice is deeply influenced by my Jamaican and Scottish heritage, through which I create vibrant, textured pieces that explore British Caribbean identity, cultural narratives, and the rich biodiversity of the natural world. For me, each idea or brief determines its medium, leading to an experimental approach that allows the concept to find its most authentic form of expression.
My unique perspective has been shaped by my academic journey – an Anthropology and Sociology BA from Goldsmiths and a Scenography MA from the Royal School of Speech and Drama. This foundation enriches my collaborations with galleries, museums, and communities across the UK.
Recently, I've been honoured to be featured in Serendipity Institute's "100 Black Women That Made Their Mark" exhibition and to participate in the "Caribbean Footsteps" exhibition at Weston Park Museum in Sheffield. I am a 2023 Delphian Gallery Open Call Winner, who has exhibited at the Bodleian Libraries as part of the Museum of Colours' groundbreaking "These Things Matter" exhibition, which examines Britain's colonial and slavery legacy. My previous exhibitions include Pitt Rivers Museum, Manchester Poetry Museum, Monaverse Lisbon, Notting Hill Arts Club and Week54 Gallery Mayfair.
My work extends beyond traditional gallery spaces in socially engaged arts and collaborations — I've co-produced and created a VR experience with local students at Time and Tide Museum (2024), created audio visual decolonial responses to museum artefacts for the Bodleian Libraries (2023), animations to campaign for Debt Justice at Peckham Levels (2023), honoured Sheffield's African Caribbean community with a mural at SADDACA community centre (2024), delivered coproduction collage labs with Sheffield Flourish mental health charity, and live illustrations as part of the Nurturing Ecologies Residency with RESOLVE Collective.
As a DJ, I'm a resident at MONDO radio station and part of CALABASH Collective. My sound has travelled internationally, with performances for Worldwide FM, Groundworks and in Rio De Janeiro. This sonic practice complements and enriches my visual art, creating multisensory experiences for audiences that bridge different forms of cultural expression.
Through my art and community workshops, I'm dedicated to making creativity accessible and transformative, as it has been integral to my own healing. I believe in weaving together hidden histories and cultures with innovative mediums to create meaningful artistic experiences that resonate with diverse audiences.
