“It’s The Debt That You Owe: Debt, Colonialism, and Resistance” Exhibition (2023)

I was honoured to contribute my animated short to “It’s the Debt That You Owe: Debt, Colonialism, and Resistance,” a multidisciplinary exhibition held by Debt Justice at Peckham Levels in November, 2023. The exhibition brought together 12 artists working across various mediums to explore the modern-day debt crisis and its roots in colonialism.
My piece was inspired by Thomas Sankara’s 1987 critique of colonial debt and its connection to global systems of exploitation. Using low-fi animation, illustration, and sound design, I highlighted how debt has been weaponized to maintain economic control over post-colonial nations, perpetuating inequality under the guise of development. Exhibited on a vintage TV screen, this work reflects my commitment to challenging narratives of power and exposing the ongoing impact of colonialism on the Global South. Through this piece, I invite viewers to consider the urgent need for resistance and reimagined global justice.
